YELLOW STRINGER is a bit of an anomaly. A female protagonist. A stylized art that seems at home with all ages animation. A plot that harkens back to classic cartoons like SCOOBY DOO. None of these things are what you think of when the idea of Saturday PM, a DIVERSE SEINEN MANGA anthology, comes up. The sister publication was supposed to be the antithesis of all-ages, teen friendly, battle manga epics like APPLE BLACK, CLOCK STRIKER and BULLY EATER from our sister publication, Saturday AM.
But YELLOW STRINGER is ALL ABOUT DECEPTION and the series is all about uncovering the TRUTH behind murder, conspiracy, and deadly beings. This artist first wowed us with his short story - MARA THE MARTIAN in issue 71 of Saturday AM. The #summerofmanga experience was a 1st for him but Goeffrey Jean-Louis assured art not only impressed the publisher, Frederick Jones, but it inspired him to immediately discuss the ‘counter programming’ opportunity to bring him to Saturday PM.
Classic manga like Gunsmith Cats had popularized the look of Manga in the 1980’s and that timeless quality was a key aspect of Goeffrey’s artwork. After discussion commenced around what series he’d like to create - the idea of a MURDER MYSTERY with SUPERNATURAL ELEMENTS came about and YELLOW STRINGER was born.
So, we wanted to know what were his biggest influences to crafting his 1st series?
