SEINEN INFLUENCES - GOEFFREY JEAN-LOUIS, creator of YELLOW STRINGER

OUTLAND is the 1st series by newcomer, Rashad Milhouse

YELLOW STRINGER is a bit of an anomaly. A female protagonist. A stylized art that seems at home with all ages animation. A plot that harkens back to classic cartoons like SCOOBY DOO. None of these things are what you think of when the idea of Saturday PM, a DIVERSE SEINEN MANGA anthology, comes up. The sister publication was supposed to be the antithesis of all-ages, teen friendly, battle manga epics like APPLE BLACK, CLOCK STRIKER and BULLY EATER from our sister publication, Saturday AM.

But YELLOW STRINGER is ALL ABOUT DECEPTION and the series is all about uncovering the TRUTH behind murder, conspiracy, and deadly beings. This artist first wowed us with his short story - MARA THE MARTIAN in issue 71 of Saturday AM. The #summerofmanga experience was a 1st for him but Goeffrey Jean-Louis assured art not only impressed the publisher, Frederick Jones, but it inspired him to immediately discuss the ‘counter programming’ opportunity to bring him to Saturday PM.

Classic manga like Gunsmith Cats had popularized the look of Manga in the 1980’s and that timeless quality was a key aspect of Goeffrey’s artwork. After discussion commenced around what series he’d like to create - the idea of a MURDER MYSTERY with SUPERNATURAL ELEMENTS came about and YELLOW STRINGER was born.

So, we wanted to know what were his biggest influences to crafting his 1st series?

GUNSMITH CATS was one of the earlier manga from the 1980’s to make it to America and had such authenticity for gun and car enthusiasts that it became a popular gateway for new anime fans.

Gunsmith Cats (ガンスミス キャッツ Gansumisu Kyattsu) is a Japanese seinen manga series written and illustrated by Kenichi Sonoda. The series describes the adventures of young women fighting crime in Chicago. 19-year-old Irene "Rally" Vincent operates the titular "Gunsmith Cats" gun shop but also works as a bounty hunter which is the impetus behind many of the stories. She is assisted in both activities by her housemate, former prostitute "Minnie" May Hopkins. Rally is an expert combat shooter and marksman with just about every firearm in existence, as well as a brilliant driver. May is an explosives expert, knowing the inner workings of and many uses of all manner of explosive devices. Teenage ex-burglar and lock-picker Misty Brown later joins the team and there is also Becky Farrah, a top, if expensive, source of information on underworld activity.
